Programme descriptionThe programme brings together natural and social sciences for a comprehensive understanding of environmental challenges and solutions at global as well as local scales. Students will learn about causes and effects of environmental issues related, for instance, to climate change, biodiversity, desertification, and water and land degradation. ; The programme explores challenges linked to governance, power relations and international cooperation. International environmental bodies and policy implications of conventions are considered. Development and sustainability in relation to economic growth, welfare, health, poverty, rights and conflicts are important elements. The programme consists of courses, field research and thesis writing. Field studies can be arranged in several countries in the South. ; The programme prepares students for work in national and international agencies, such as ministries and environmental organisations. They may also find jobs in development aid agencies, schools, research institutions, media and consulting companies.

Formal prerequisitesBachelor's degree in a relevant field, e.g., ecology, resource management, agriculture, forestry, geography, economics, political science or social science. Annual admission is 30-40 students. Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with UMB regulations.; The Norwegian immigration authority requires that non-EU/EEA students can document possession of NOK 80,000 (approx. USD 12,000) to cover the the first year's living expenses.
