Programme descriptionIndustrial Ecology is a modern and systems oriented approach towards analysing and solving environmental problems. Its focus is on how energy and materials flow through society by way of the production, utilization and disposal of various products, applying the metaphor of ecology to analyze the industrial systems involved. Based on an understanding of the connection between nature, production and consumption, it develops strategies and tools to reduce emissions and resource use. Its particular strength is the usefulness of various environmental systems analysis methods for the examination and design of technologies, organisation and policy, contributing to sustainable development at different levels of production and consumption systems. Industrial Ecology is relevant to both industrialized and rapidly industrializing countries. ; With its study program in Industrial Ecology, NTNU has had a regular degree programme in Industrial Ecology since 1998.
