Biology - Northern populations and ecosystems/ Biology | |
![]() | University of TromsøThe University of Tromsø is the northernmost university of the world. Our location on the edge of the Arctic implies a mission. The Arctic region is of increasing global importance. Climate change, the exploitation of Arctic resources and environmental threats are topics of great public concern, which UiT takes special interest in. Studying and working at UiT allows you to explore global issues from a close-up perspective. |

| Programme description | This area regards students choosing a master thesis on causes and consequences of spatial and temporal variation in populations and ecosystems in northern areas. Focus is on problems connected to the spatial distribution and population dynamics of single species, as well as more broadly on identification of key processes in whole ecosystems. Issues on a spectrum of species and ecosystem processes are selected based on fundamental considerations, as well as more specific topics connected to economically important species (e.g. game or semi-domestic species), introduced species (with expected ecosystem effects) or rare/threatened species. Emphasis is problems specific to northern ecosystems (i.e. northern Norway and adjacent arctic areas). The students will acquire broad skill in ecological theory and methodology. With a degree within this area the students will be ready to take on jobs within wildlife/nature management or continue research on the subject matter. |
