Programme descriptionThe Master´s Degree Programme in Astronomy will provide students with an introduction to astronomic research. Students will learn to use modern tools to process astronomic observations and to solve theoretical problems.; In this programme we emphasize theoretical understanding of astrophysics and practical use of methods from mathematics, physics and computer science to solve astronomical problems. This is competence which is valued, not only for scientists doing basic research in astronomy, but also in applied research and development within e.g., information technology and telecommunication.; You choose to specialize within one of the following themes: Solar and stellar physics, Cosmology and extragalactic astronomy or Celestial mechanics.; You write a 60-credit Master´s thesis based on an independent research project where you learn what basic research is about. This will give you experience which is also most valuable in other professions than that of the research astronomer. Parts of the work on the thesis research project can be done at cooperating universities abroad. Sometimes the research may take you to exotic places, e.g., the Nordic Optical Telescope on a mountain top in the Canary Islands. In addition to the master?s thesis, you must take 60 credits of advanced courses in astronomy and other subjects such as physics, mathematics and computer science.
