Programme descriptionThe MSc programme in Urban Ecological Planning at the Department of Urban Planning and Design, is addressing urban issues in industrialised and developing countries. The focus is on environmental, social and resource aspects of urban planning, where the aim is to establish linkages between ideology, knowledge and action in the planning practice. Urban development and planning in developing countries is often out of control, and the planning efforts are fragmented and incremental. A sustainable approach is trying to increase local responsibility and capacity, by taking immediate actions, and solving local problems. The programme aims at promoting a fruitful exchange between developing and industrialised countries, by sharing knowledge and successful methods of ecological oriented urban planning. In the two first semesters of the MSc programme, students complete courses within Urban Ecological Planning in Developing Countries/ Project work (a two months fieldwork in Katmandu, Nepal, is included in the first semester), Urban Ecological Planning Method and Theory, Urban Ecological Planning in Diverse Cultures, and 15 credits electives. In the 3rd semester students complete courses within Planning Theory, and start analysing their data from the field work in the home country (fieldwork takes place in the summer between the first and second year of the MSc programme). The 4th and last semester is fully devoted to the master's thesis (30 credits).
