| Programme description | Chemical oceanography focuses on chemical substances in the oceans and their importance for the greenhouse-gas-regulating ocean. The main focus is on the inorganic carbon cycle as a driver of climate change and the link to changes in ocean circulation, mixing and transport. These forces are important in order to understand the present and future changes in climate. One important branch of chemical oceanography is the use of tracers (radiometric, transient and natural substances) to improve our understanding of the sensitivity of the climate system, ocean mixing (isopycnal and diapycnal mixing), circulation and residence time in the ocean (thermohaline circulation).; There are large uncertainties in our understanding of piston velocities of climate gases between air and sea, and the boundary layer dynamics will be studied to improve this knowledge. This information is important in the assessment of the ocean role as a source and a sink of gases.; There are strong links between the inorganic carbon cycle and ecosystems, and an important theme in chemical oceanography is as well to evaluate the consequences of changes in these systems.; The master's programme in Geophysics at the University of Bergen is unique, because you will be introduced to both meteorology and oceanography, irrespective of which of the four directions you choose. |
